DSS helps students with documented disabilities explore and acquire skills, strategies and tools to use in accessing their courses. There are many possible accommodations, however, the following is a sample of those most commonly used.
What are Accommodations?
Accommodations are academic adjustment that reduces barriers caused by a disability.
Accommodations ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to course content, can participate fully in all activities and that course policies do not have the effect of discriminating against a student based on their disability. DSS collaborates with instructors to ensure that students are supported in their learning, and that we remain in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
Types of Accommodations
Assistive Technology/Alternate Format Textbooks
DSS provides specialized hardware and software to students to meet their accommodation needs. Some examples of assistive technology supports include:
- Audio-recording and note-taking technology
- Screen readers and text-to-speech options
- Digital stethoscopes and microscopes
- Alternate Format Textbooks
Classroom Accommodations
Classroom accommodations are designed to ensure that students have full access to participate in all class activities and assignments, as well as to ensure that course policies do not have effect of discriminating against students in relation to their disability or health condition. Some examples of classroom accommodations include:
- Audio-recording lectures
- Copy of lecture materials
- Preferential seating
- Breaks during class
Interpreting Services
DSS provides interpreters for students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing for classes and on-campus activities (club meetings, advising appointments, tutoring, etc.). In general, at least one-week advance notice is needed to schedule an interpreter.
Testing Accommodations
Testing Accommodations must be approved through Disability Support Services prior to the test date. If students are taking their exams with accommodations at the Testing Center, they must schedule the exam at the Testing Center in advance. Some examples of testing accommodations include:
- Extended Time for Exams
- Reduced Distraction Environment
- Use of Assistive Technology for Exams
